The Pyramid

Il sistema calcistico inglese è denominato "La Piramide".

Il termine "La Piramide" deriva dalla  moltitudine di campionati di calcio inglese collegati tra di loro attraverso il meccanismo della promozione/retrocessione in accordo con la Premier League e la Football League.  

Il sistema calcistico inglese ha come priorità quella di permette a qualsiasi club di iniziare dall'ultimo livello della Piramide per arrivare in cima ovvero alla Premiership. Ogni club, potenzialmente, ha le stesse probabilità di giocare nella serie A inglese.

Questo sistema permette, inoltre, di promuovere i campionati locali e consente alle squadre che vi partecipano minori costi di gestione. Più una squadra sale di livello più le spese aumentano consentendo una naturale selezione, per avere ai livelli più alti società solide economicamente e con un adeguato seguito di tifosi.

Attualmente "La Piramide" conta circa 140 campionati, suddivisi in 480 divisioni, con circa 7000 squadre.

Dal 5 livello in poi i campionati vengono comunemente chiamati di "Non-League" che sta a simboleggiare il carattere dilettantistico e/o semiprofessionistico di tutti i club che vi partecipano.
